A2 - Options for Addressing Chronic Pain and Opioid Use Disorder in Methadone Treatment

Presentation Summary: Chronic pain frequently occurs with opioid use disorder in methadone treatment. Finding referrals can be difficult and few evidence-based integrated treatment approaches exist. The speakers will summarize findings about the clinical needs of clients on methadone treatment with chronic pain and the challenges reported by counselors treating them. The speakers will review findings and lessons learned from conducting in methadone programs individual therapy as well as an array of counseling groups for pain management, including virtual reality, Wii Fit, juggling, and Tai Chi. Finally, the speakers will discuss the potentially important role of sleep in managing pain in methadone treatment.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • List major components of cognitive-behavioral therapy for chronic pain and opioid use disorder.
  • Describe brief promising group interventions for chronic pain in busy methadone treatment programs.
  • Define treatment approaches to manage sleep disturbance among clients on methadone treatment with chronic pain.
