MAT Advocacy in an Evolving Landscape

Presentation Summary: Back for a second conference, AATOD’s Legislative Advocacy Committee will present a session to aid stakeholders in understanding the current policy climate, including changes that have occurred since the last conference, and the continuing call for “methadone reform.” Across the nation there are efforts to increase access to opioid use disorder treatment to combat the worsening opioid overdose crisis. AATOD supports and has worked for decades on regulatory, legislative, and funding improvements to increase access to evidence-based treatment. In this session, participants will be informed of the current policy issues facing the treatment field and allow attendees to generate proposals for innovation and modernization in the context of growing calls for methadone and MAT reform. Our goal is to energize and activate additional advocates among conference participants and teach them to advocate for evidence-based policies to increase access to opioid treatment.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Identify current policy issues facing opioid treatment programs.
  • Describe how to effectively educate individuals about current issues and advocate for opioid treatment patients and programs.
  • Demonstrate how to schedule meetings with policy makers and other stakeholders to influence current opioid treatment program regulations, policies, and proposed legislation.
