2 - Plan of Safe Care and the Role of the Addiction Treatment Professional

Presentation Summary: Substance use during pregnancy has increased dramatically in the United States in recent years, leading to a massive increase in babies born with drug and alcohol exposure. Plans of Safe Care (POSC) are a national mandate for health and other service providers to develop plans with mothers that address their substance use treatment needs, infant safety needs, and family health and wellness needs. This presentation will guide the audience through the POSC legislation, provide guidance on designing, implementing, and evaluating POSC in their service environments, discuss the data driving POSC decision-making, and provide evaluation metrics to guide program success.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Describe trends in substance use disorders among pregnant women in New York State and the U.S.
  • Understand the federal mandate related to Plans of Safe Care and describe the hospital/provider's role in ensuring that POSC is completed prior to discharge postpartum.
  • Identify the various components of POSC and understand how to evaluate POSC effectiveness via data collection and analysis
