PC02 - Patient Advocacy in Medication Assisted Treatment

Presentation Summary: This session provides a basic understanding of the physiology of opioid use disorder. It includes basic clinical information about treatment with methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone, a review of current federal regulations provided by regulatory authorities, and basic communication skills and strategies to work as a patient advocate on such issues as educating patients about their rights, handling grievances, common legal issues, systems advocacy work and working within communities to benefit patients and treatment. This session is designed for non-clinicians. Participants will come away with basic knowledge and patient advocacy tools.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, participants will:
  • Develop an understanding of the basic physiology of opioid use disorder (OUD) and the medications used to treat OUD.
  • Develop an understanding of the federal regulations that apply to the care, treatment and services that are provided in certified opioid treatment programs.
  • Understand basic communication skills and strategies used in patient advocacy for individuals receiving care, treatment and services in opioid treatment programs.
