Presentation Summary: Gambling is rapidly expanding in the shadows behind the overdose epidemic. While treatment providers have been working on improving their quality of care to include medicated-assisted treatment, online support groups, training in trauma, and several other evidence-based practices it is important to include how gambling-related harms. Gambling has several connections with substance use disorders and mental health. This presentation will focus on defining what gambling is and related harms, discuss the impact on other issues related to substance use and mental health, review survey findings from patients receiving MAT, and identify ways organizations can improve gambling awareness in their services.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will:
Define what gambling is, the current implications of gambling expansion and advances in technology, and distinguish between social gambling, problem gambling and gambling use disorder.
Identify specific connections gambling has with substance use, mental health, and suicide; and be able to interpret survey and screening findings about gambling-related behaviors in individuals who are taking medications for opioid use disorder in Opioid Treatment Provider settings.
List ways to be able to apply screening, assessing, and providing resources for individuals who may be showing signs and symptoms related to problem gambling or gambling use disorder to help collaborate with providers and support ongoing treatment for opioid use disorder.
